so the last time we convened for a little monday music session we had a listen to some kansas… and a couple of weeks before that to some styx, and at the time i mentioned we might as well follow up with the third of the 70’s triumvirate so here we go with… boston…
first up, from 1976 - more than a feeling..
next, the follow-up… don’t look back…
and finally, foreplay/longtime…
yeah, they’re pretty much the obvious ones, but there’s also a reason they’re classics…
for some reason, styx’ “sing for the day” has been stuck in my head for the past week or so… so how about we see if some of the power pop groups music will help clear things out, shall we?
ok, kids, first off, my apologies for the lack of posts last week… things suddenly got crazy hectic here at moose central capped by a 1400 mile round-trip to pittsburgh for a really good parents’ weekend visit with the son… but more on that later - for now how about we slide back into things with a little monday night music?
y’know, it’s funny how life is sometimes… i first met butch rice… well, let’s not bother to count how many years ago, let’s just say “in college”… he was part of “my group” at the time… if you’ve had the experience, you know what i mean… those people with whom, during those years you share so much time and so many experiences that it seems like they will be a part of your life forever… but, of course, life and time and fate seem to have their own ideas and after a while you all start to go your own ways, to drift apart, and after awhile years have passed and most of those people have become memories or perhaps the subject of a story you tell sometimes about “back in the day” or maybe even just a “i wonder what ever happened to…”
well, it seems i’ve been lucky lately and through facebook have managed to get back in touch with a lot of those old friends, and it has been a lot of fun… catching up, sharing old pictures, all that kind of stuff… and there have been surprises along the way, too… for instance, butch has become quite a talented and accomplished musician, and he even hasa c.d. out now on louisville’s ear x-tacy label…who knew? certainly not your loyal moose… however, in celebration of old friendships and auld acquaintances, it seems only appropriate to share with you loyal mooseheads the (unfortunately) only two videos i could find of butch doin’ what he seems to love…
first up, a solo spotlight from “the player’s spot”, a louisville tv show…
and secondly, butch performing “come pick me up” with andrea davidson at stevie ray’s blues bar…
hope y’all enjoy, and for more info on butch and how to get a copy of his cd, be sure to check out his website at butchrice.com…
hey, monday night, tuesday night… when it comes to good music it doesn’t really matter what day it is, now does it? so tonight we’re gonna go with a kind of follow-up to last night’s offering with different takes on sir paul’s music… what do i mean? well, how about we start with last night’s first song, band on the run, but this time done by foo fighters?
red house painters is a side project of mark kozelek…yes, the same mark kozalek of sun kil moon… and their take on “silly love songs” is definitely… different…
next up, a group from 1972 doing “maybe i’m amazed”, it’s the faces… and yes, that second vocalist is exactly who you think he is…
finally, how about a live version of “live and let die” from guns and roses…
dunno why, but i’m in the mood for a little jeff lynne today, so why don’t we start by going back to the elo days with turn to stone…
then it’s up to the eighties (and i mean ya seriously don’t get much more eighties than this) with elo’s team-up with then super-hot olivia newton john for the movie xanadu…
and finally, to the nineties and a very different team up - jeff lynne, geaorge harrison, roy orbison, tom petty, and bob dylan, otherwise known as the travelling wilburys…
if you want to know the real reason why it doesn’t matter whether obama or clinton is the eventual democrat candidate all you need do is check out last week’s nashville scene cover story on the band jypsi, which is pretty well summed up by these quotes:
“There are a lot of radio folks resistant to embracing a band this left of center,” says Arista Nashville vice president of promotion Skip Bishop with a good degree of understatement.
One is John Shomby, director of programming and operations for Max Media of Virginia, who says, “Their music is very good, but I think people would look at them and go, ‘Huh?’ I’ve got to ask, ‘How is this going to translate to the country audience?’ Knowing what I know about that audience, it doesn’t adjust very well to stuff like that. The Dixie Chicks were kind of out there, but not like this.”
wow, these kids must really be “out there”, hunh? well,as always the moose encourages you to check ‘em out for yourself… and here’s your opportunity (actually three opportunities) to:
of course, i suppose it should be refreshing to hear the kind of honesty from label representatives who are willing to say it doesn’t matter how talented a band is if they’re not willing to compromise their look to be something they’re not… just like i suppose it should be refreshing to hear these folks actually admit how they feel:
like i said, i suppose it should, but…
le sigh….
i think i’m gonna go listen to some more good jypsi music…
sometimes you run into something so new, so unique, so surreal, that there’s really just no need in commenting… that’s the case, i think, with this week’s featured artists… the leningrad cowboys…
coming from finland our first clip is a relatively straightforward cover of the beatles “i saw her standing there”…
next, the cowboys team with the red army choir for “stairway to heaven”…
and finally, it’s the coboys and the red army chorus again, this time on “sweet home alabama”… trust me, skynyrd never sounded like this… and never will again…
like i said, i don’t know that there’s really much i can add to the purity of these performances… unless someone out there can hook your faithful moose up with a (non-pal, non region2) copy of the “leningrad cowboys go america” movie…

Welcome!
hey there! glad ya could make it... welcome to the moose's basement, a place for sharing, chatting, and just generally b-sing about movies, music, tv shows, old radio, books comics, or whatever else happens to grab our attention... basically, if it falls under the heading of "pop culture" it's fair game here... yer host is the durnmoose, a 44 year old nashvillian who should know better by now... and i'm often aided and abetted by the damned squirrel, the squirrelist, more and more by my own papoose, and a whole cast of characters you'll get to know if you hang around long enough... so pull yourself up a chair or a stool or a piece of couch, grab a beer or a cuppa joe (we personally recommend drew's brews lost weekend, and no, we don't get a kickback for the recommendation) or whatever other libation you prefer, and jump right in... the only rules are to respect each other and remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how idiotic that opinion may seem... and no throwing the cheese dip!
